TLDR: Older (pre-1995-ish) Tilley hats tend to run slightly larger than the same size in a newer Tilley hats (1995-ish to 2018).
Tilley hats with size tags express the information in three ways; Hat size and inner band measurements in inches and centimeters.
For those who seek, collect and wear vintage Tilley hats, the very best way to consistently find a hat that will fit, regardless of manufacturing date, is to figure out your head diameter in centimeters. I haven’t checked every size for accuracy, mind you, but it seems from examining the tags as though the metric measurements seem to be the most logical progression.
If you only know your “hat size”, then read on.
The dividing line in the (first) sizing change appears to be right around the time (1995) that the www.tilley.com website shows up on the labels. Still working that out but it’s a good rule of thumb for now. YMMV.
Now I tried putting this up on Reddit but the chart boggled the interface and so, I’m hoping for better luck here.
(thanks again for the forum!)
I’m going to try it as a list this time and see if it works.
The first set will be the pre-website labeled hats and the second set is the post 1995 hats with websites on their labels.
Hat size 7 22” - 56.5cm >>>> 22” - 56cm
Hat size 7 1/8 22 1/3” - 57.5cm >>>> 22 3/8” - 57cm
Hat size 7 1/4 22 3/4” - 58.5cm >>>> 22 3/4” - 58cm
Hat size 7 3/8 23 1/8” - 59.5cm >>>> 23 1/8” - 59cm
Hat size 7 1/2 23 1/2” - 60.5cm >>>> 23 3/8” - 60cm
Hat size 7 5/8 24” - 61.5cm >>>> 23 7/8” - 61cm
Hat size 7 3/4 24 3/8” - 62.5cm >>>> 24 1/4” - 61.5cm
Hat size 7 7/8 24 3/4” - 63.5cm >>>> 24 5/8” - 62.5cm
Hat size 8 25 1/8” - 64.5cm >>>> 25” - 63.5cm
As you can hopefully see from that “chart” is that the older, pre-1995 hats (pre-website) tend to be slightly larger than the post 1995 hats.
Please note, I have not made any effort to examine Tilley hat sizes for hats made after 2018.
Hope this helps.
