I’ve posted a few photos of this before, but excitingly, another example has appeared recently so I think it worthwhile to revisit this, the hat design from which every Tilley hat ultimately sprung. First and most obvious is the early label. (I intend to explore that in more detail in a subsequent post, below) Vintage Tilley collectors will immediately note the complete absence of a crown pocket in this, quite simple, hat design. There is no pocket because there is no flotation! The crown is just an oval shaped piece of cotton duck stitched to the top of the hat. Another unique feature of this early Tilley is what appears to be an early effort at making a logo. This idea of an externally visible logo identifying the maker of the hat was an idea which was apparently abandoned quite early on as no subsequent Tilley hats displayed a logo again until after Alex Tilley sold the company and brand in 2015. Note: it is quite exciting to see a second example of this logo as it would seem to confirm that this was an early feature and not just an isolated frivolity. Check out the pics. I’ve included a few new pics of the second example of this 1st gen T1 hat that has surfaced recently. We can dissect the remaining aspects of these very early Tilleys in follow up posts.

The one with the signature is mine. The other pictures I found in a post on facebook’s Tilley group. I’m delighted to see another example of my signed hat, with its odd little stitched logo. These hats are the appleseeds that started it all. D

That could make it a prototype

That could make it a prototype It’s possible, although the existence of another hat with basically identical features (or lack thereof) demonstrates that there were at least two of them. The date (10-83) under the signature definitely narrows these down, date wise, but whether these are 1980 Tilley hats is hard to know at this point. All we can be sure of is that mine was made during, or before, October of 1983. (Coming up on 41 years old, at least!) I will be keeping my eyes peeled for any others like this.

I did try to search out the previous owner, “Stanton ‘Puffin’ Calhoun” but came up empty. With all your Google Fu, maybe you would have more success. With a name like Stanton Calhoun, I’m gonna guess he comes from what we call “old money” in New England.

I, for one, cannot ever seem to sign my name the same way twice. No idea how any celebrities do it in such a way that an expert could verify an autograph.
