As a refresher, I will include a photo of the pre-restoration hats that will hopefully be first but I’m not yet figured on how this photo interface works so… maybe.
Anyway, when last we convened, we were looking at two hats, a mid 80’s T3 and a mid-90’s T1, both of which had seem some use over the years and had lingering stains. The older hat’s cotton duck is clearly different than the cotton on the newer hat. Was it bleached or further processed or is it just different material? Not sure, but the results of various testing revealed that it is HARD to clean an old Tilley without finding the dreaded mustard yellow that lives inside the fabric. Lol
So, the solution, once again, was a tub dye job. I used the same procion dye with soda ash and salt but this time I used equal parts jet black and medium blue hoping for something darker than the T2 I did in Maine.
For reasons of impatience, I only left the hats in the dye for a few hours before rinsing.
Next time maybe I will try for overnight or, maybe just spring for some actual navy blue colored dye.
See photos for results. Unfortunately I had court all day so I could only grab sunlit pics first thing in the morning and they are a little rough. I will take a few more after one more rinse and dry.
As you can see, the outrageous staining of the old T3 seems erased! The newer hat does seem to have taken a darker hue from the same bath than the older hat, lending credence to the idea that the fabrics are different. Judge for yourself and opine as you may be inclined.
