Obviously I spend an inordinate amount of time accumulating, wearing and thinking about Tilley hats, so… hear me out.
The TH5 may BE the best Tilley hat. Points to consider:
1. Material: cotton is solid and sturdy but heavy and dense. Nylon is very light and but airtight and completely nonabsorbant. Hemp? It’s lighter than cotton by stiffer than the nylon. It absorbs sweat nearly as well as cotton, but breathes better than both cotton and nylon. The UV protection may be less than nylon or cotton but only slightly. Hemp feels like a material that finds middle ground between the extremes of cotton/nylon in most categories.
2. Brim: The no.5, medium brimmed Tilley hats are, imho, the most versatile of all the offerings. The 4/6 brims are better for full on sun protection and pure UV blockage purposes… but they are pretty big for casual use. Wear that size brim in a car, bus, plane or a crowded elevator and it will seem way too big and borderline obnoxious. The _5 brims are enough to cover ears and neck when wielded thoughtfully and they will not rub against your headrest or block the view of people behind you at the concert. Once again, the middle ground between bucket brim and wearable parasol.
3. Comfort: The combo of medium weight, medium softness, medium absorption, medium brim and overall average score in basically every hat related descriptive results in a versatile, wearable and very comfortable hat. Does it’s job without raising a fuss or making a scene.
4. Looks: The TH5, well… it looks good. A properly fitted hat curves the brim over the wearer’s ears just right and the crown sits at just the right height.
Alright… watching the DNC and the better speakers are coming on and I’m already growing a bit sleepy here in the salty air of Maine so… that’s enough for now. If you disagree, post up and prove me wrong. If you agree that the TH5 is the best and quintessential Tilley hat, post up and tell why you like it best.
