Decided to start a new thread on this subject as a form of poll. Imho, the advice Tilley issued regarding the proper fit is conflicting and, thus, inconclusive, which makes a certain sense as “fit” is so dependent upon user whim.
For starters, my head measures 60cm, which on the Tilley chart indicates that I am a size 7 1/2.
Tilley tells us that if we know our hat size, we should choose a size larger for our Tilleys, especially the cotton duck models.
When I was issued and/or purchased American baseball caps, my size was always 7 1/2. I could wear a 7 5/8 or 7 7/8 baseball hat, but not for actually playing baseball. If I was going to be moving, the 7 1/2 size ensured that my baseball cap would always be situated property and I even wore flip up/down eye shades on the bill back when those were fashionable 35 years ago.
Under that advice, my Tilley size is a 7 5/8, which is wearable in Tilley form but definitely defies the other bits of fitting advice issued by Tilley.
1. We are advised that we should be able to “easily” fit two fingers between the brim and our foreheads.
2. We should be able to turn the hat on our heads from side to side “without any friction” between the hat and our foreheads.
Well, neither of those suggestions fly when I’m using a 7 5/8 Tilley LTM6, that is for sure.
if I ignore the “one size up” advice and focus on the finger and friction tests, the Tilley sizes that seem to meet that criteria are either a 7 3/4 (62.5cm) size in original (pre-90’s) cotton duck Tilleys or a 7 7/8 (62.5cm) in the Nylamtium or post 1993 Tilleys!
Consequently, I wear Tilley hats ranging in size from size 7 5/8 all the the way up to size 8 (one very shrunk 1980’s T1)
The more I will be sweating, moving, bending and/or running, I wear a tighter Tilley. (My 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 Airflos @ 61cm and 61.5cm, respectively)
If I will be in a less physically active scenario, like on a boat or a beach or a cocktail party on a beach or a boat, I wear my prefer the larger, looser Tilleys, including a early 90’s T4 in 7 7/8 size which corresponds to a 63.5cm band!
So how do YOU fit your (Canadian-made) Tilleys?*. Post up!
*(Ive no idea what sizes correspond to modern, Chinese made Tilleys from 2018 to present as I’ve never owned any of them)
