I see far more hats for sale with brag tags included than those offered for sale with manuals. I guess that makes sense. Once you read the manual, you don’t really need to carry it around. Unfortunately, the brag tags don’t seem to be particularly dateable, other than pre/post website address. Attachments:

They didn't really leave alot of clues as to how to date the hats.
That is part of the fun decoding the mystery.

So, in light of this thread, I decided to see what original brag tags I might have to compare and contrast. This early brag tag, circa 1988-87 (pre-1800 ENDURES) is interesting as they seem meant to serve as mini catalogs, listing the three different styles of Tilley hat available, including the new T3 (in 3 colors even!) and including instructions for measuring your head. Here are two, newer brag tag sets, post-1-800-ENDURES (363-8737) though interestingly neither set actually spells that out that way. No website yet so both sets are, presumably, pre-1993. Note the different phone numbers on the “Understandably!” story. Attachments:

Continuing this discussion: Here is a set of brag tags that were accompanied by an ad for an ‘88-‘89 catalog. Note that only the T3b (brown) and NOT the T3n (navy) as in the older brag tags above. Attachments:

So coolNot very often you get the documentation in the hat. It's the first thing I always check on a second hand hat.

Funny thing, so many re-sellers have no idea about the pocket, so I often ask (usually after settling on the price, first). In some cases, like this one, you can actually see that there is stuff in the pocket in their eBay photos. Attachments:

Another set of “pre-1-800 ENDURES” brag tags for your perusal. These found in an early T3 probably circa 1987-8. Two interesting notes: - The paper stock used for these tags is somewhat heavier and seems to be a shinier gloss than typical brag tags - This version is obvious an earlier version based on the mention of only one additional color for the T3 (T3B in brown) (compare with the early brag tag which mentions a “T3N” in navy blue, above)
